Today I'm going to show you how
Little Miss Organized's 2nd graders
write Friendly Letters.
I realize that Friendly Letters are not a main writing staple in our Common Core for 2nd graders; however, I feel it is imperative they write them for the knowledge thereof, as well as any time you can incorporate more writing, the better off the students are!!
I always use 2 Essentials:
Every student has his/her own writing folder
Tip: (extras are made up for when new students come)
I make writing templates of how to write a friendly letter (it's a sample letter I wrote to Junie B. Jones)
copy it on card stock
copy other templates about:
transition words
color choice words
onomatopoeia (sound words)
a double-sided drawing template:
one side is people (sooo important)
the other side is nature/habitats
My writing schedule:
Mon: Read Aloud Story & Caveman Plan on writing topic
Tues.-Thurs.: Write our stories, moving one paragraph at a time, per day or so
Fri.: Friendly Letters
When we write our friendly letters, we all write to the Star Student of the week.
The Star Student gets to write to anyone of his/her choice.
When we are finished writing, we draw underneath.
Sometimes I put up a directed draw on an overhead, like this one in their sample writing.
Other times, they pull out their drawing templates and choose pics to draw on their own!
We have been incorporating our adjectives into our Friendly Letter writing, from our practice in,
A Week's Worth Of Work Learning Contracts:
It's filled with nothing but language conventions for daily practice. This is why we do it right, to incorporate it into our writing!

In the end, it all pays off, because they have writing that looks beautiful (and we will be working on adding more adjectives):
